Obituary for Paul E. Hughes

The family is saddened to announce that Paul Evans Hughes died on September 20, 2016 in Pittsburgh after a near decade-long battle with kidney disease. He is survived by his father, Sylvester Hughes of Pittsburgh; brother, Kenneth Hughes of Pittsburgh; daughters Taylor (Tia) Hughes of Harrisburg and Tracy Schaeffer of North Dakota. Also by his grandchildren Jeremy, Jaden, Jasmine and Jemma, in North Dakota and the large extended Clark family in Texas.Paul received his Bachelor of Science degree from Slippery Rock University in Health and Physical Education and a Master of Education, Health and Physical Education from East Stroudsburg University. He taught high school health and physical education classes for many years in northwestern PA and Harrisburg and was involved with volleyball for over 30 years. He coached many winning women's volleyball teams at Slippery Rock University, Shippensburg University and East Stroudsburg University. He held various certifications with the United States Volleyball Association (USVBA), USA Volleyball (Regional and National) , PIAA, National Association for Girls and Women Sports (NAGWS) and officiated volleyball at the local, collegiate, state, national and international levels. As a volleyball official he participated in the Paralympics Sitting Volleyball Games/trials in Australlia, Greece and South Korea, the Special Olympics World Games in Ireland and the World Cup Sitting Volleyball for Club Teams in Sarajevo. In addition, Paul was twice honored as the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Women's Volleyball Coach of the Year.Services and burial will be at the convenience of the family according to Paul's wishes in the Clark Family Cemetery in Texas.Visitation for friends will be held at the Centenary United Methodist Church, 1010 Orchard St., Steelton on Wednesday, October 26 between 4 pm and 6 pm.In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the Red Cross at http://www.redcross.org/ with whom Paul served as a volunteer when he was a teenager.
