Life Reflections

Phyllis Michaelena Cathie-Abram was born September 1, 1949, in Pittsburgh, Pa to George and RoseLee Cathie. She peacefully transitioned to her Heavenly Home January 1, 2022.

Phyllis, affectionately known as Fickie Dee amongst her family, grew up throughout the east side of Pittsburgh with her siblings who loved her dearly. She was educated in the Pittsburgh Public School system and graduated from Westinghouse High School. Soon after, in 1967, Phyllis gave birth to her precious jewel of a daughter, Marcia Marie.

Phyllis was baptized as a young girl, but later rededicated her life to Jesus Christ, and became a member of Saint Paul Baptist Church in Pittsburgh, Pa where she was a part of the music ministry for many years.

Phyllis was known to be the life of the party amongst her family and friends with her unmatched dance moves and joyous free spirit. In the late 1960’s, Phyllis met Chang Abram, who later become her partner and love of her life. She was never one that wanted to be “tied down”, but her relationship with Chang changed that. Together they had their youngest daughter Alexis Lenae, and later married on October 19th, 1996, in front of their friends and family.

Phyllis has always had a love and passion for helping others and became a caretaker, giving the utmost love and care to the elderly. After many years as a caretaker, Phyllis decided to pursue a career change, and focus on caring for children and worked as an educator in a few daycares in the community. After some years, she decided to become certified as a daycare operator, and opened a business of her own servicing many of the children that were displaced after a local daycare closed. Her love and dedication made every child and parent that came through those doors feel safe, loved, and at home. Phyllis made sure that ANY person that crossed her path always felt safe, loved, and at home.

Outside of caring for others, Phyllis absolutely loved spending quality time with her family and friends. She enjoyed traveling all over for a good game of Bingo with her eldest daughter and bingo buddies, playing Pokeno with her best friends, playing Uno with her youngest daughter, and hosting or attending the infamous game nights the family had throughout the year. There was never a dull moment in her presence, as her jokes and laugh were just as vibrant as the smile that she delivered it with.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her mother and father RoseLee and George W. Cathie; Her beloved sisters Judy and Faye Cathie; and her loving nephews Shawn and DaRon Abram.

She leaves to cherish her precious memory; her loving, caring, and amazing husband Chang Abram; two beautiful daughters Marcia Cathie and Alexis Cathie; Siblings George D. Cathie (Cassandra), Bette Carngbe (Peter), Audrey Pope (John Edward), Gerald Cathie Sr.; Her favorite Grand-dog Pepper; two handsome Godsons Ayinde and Elysée; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other family, and friends, that she always considered as family.

Phyllis will be missed beyond words; however, we can find peace knowing that she is in Heaven, free of ALL pain and suffering; free to sing, dance, and be the joyous Phyllis we know and will always love.

“‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your Lord.” Matt. 25:23
