Obituary for Norma Frances Johnson

Norma F. Johnson was born on July 10, 1939, in Westmoreland Hospital,
Greensburg, Pennsylvania, to the union of A. Cenota Barclay and Norman F.
Barclay, who served as stewards in the AME Zion church and local restaurant
business owners. She was one of five children, Marian (Griffin), Agnes
(Gibson), Edward (Barclay), and Inez (Barclay), all of whom preceded her in
death. She accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at St. Mark AME
Zion Church, Jeannette, PA. Norma sang in the choir as two of her sisters
played piano for the church. She became an avid church attendee, splitting
worship time between Living Word Congregational Church (Rev. Roy
Aiken/cousin), Triumph Church (Rev. Giles/son-in-law), and First
Presbyterian Church, Portsmouth Ohio (Rev.Johnson/son).

After graduating high school, she married Ronald M. Johnson, SSgt, USAF,
and began her journey as a military spouse that included moves to military
bases in Minnesota and Indiana. Later, as a single parent, she attended Penn
State University and nursing school. She was active in politics campaigning
for U.S. senators, and state and local representatives. She was also
appointed to serve on the state board, and received letters of commendation
written by officials honoring her hard work and dedication to public service.
In addition, she served as a union steward at two of her places of
employment. Norma was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, served
many years for the Greensburg-Jeannette Chapter of the NAACP, and was an
active community leader advocating for equality and diversity. She also
served as a featured speaker for several local events and church services.
The Lord called Norma to the Kingdom of God on Tuesday, October 25,
2022, at approximately seven p.m., surrounded by family holding her hand,
anointing her with oil, singing hymns, and praying.

She leaves three children, Ronita Giles (Rev. Craig), Rev. Ron Johnson (Rev.
Jane), and Edward Johnson (Beth). After the death of her youngest sister,
Inez, she raised her nephew Jonathan as her own and found the time to
serve as a interim/emergency foster parent to five children, keeping in touch
with all of them along their journey. She also leaves grandchildren Jordan
Giles (Angel), Jillian Fields (Mitchell), Joshua Johnson, Justin Johnson,
Jonathan Johnson, and Elise Johnson; four great-grandchildren, Avery,
Kennedi, Karter, and Jacob; and her sister and brother’s children, Lanice
Sarfo, LaDawn Barclay-Garvin, Mark Griffin, Scipio Griffin, Kenneth Scott,
Robert Gibson, Jonathan Barclay, and many beloved nieces, nephews,
relatives, and dear friends to celebrate her life.
