Mary Eliza Brown was born in Stoney Creek, Virginia on February 2, 1925 to
the late William and Pearl (Sykes) Mason. Mary departed this life on
February 15, 2022.
Mary, also known as Mom, Grandma, Ms. Brown, Ms. Mary, Auntie, Aunt
Mary & “MUR” (inside joke) loved with an unconditional love and always
found the positive to say about everyone.
She came to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at the age of 17 with ten cents in her
pocket. Mary was married to the late William E. Brown, Sr. and from this
union had seven children.
Mary accepted Christ at an early age.
Mary worked for several years as a domestic worker, and four years at the
laundry to help support her family. She retired in her 70s (yes 70s) to care
for her ailing husband until his death.
Mary studied courses at Connelly Trade School and obtained her GED from
Community College of Allegheny County at the age of 70.
Mary was an excellent cook, especially her pot roast, greens, and chili. She
always made sure her family had a home cooked meal.
Mary was preceded in death by brothers Arthur, Freddie, Richard, Eddie and
sister Carrie.
She leaves to cherish her memory children - William, Sr (Gwenn), Sheila,
Sharon, Sandra, Dale, Sr (Carla), Shelly (Darryl, aka “the little boy”) and
Brian; brother - William Mason; and a host of grandchildren, greatgrandchildren,
great-great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
A special thank you to those who took the time to show Mary that “extra
special” love, and a special thank you to all the front-line workers at
Vincentian De Marillac Home, Magee Hospital and longtime family
doctor/friend Dr. Robert Edwards
