Obituary for Helen Deanes

HELEN (IVY) DEANES

Helen D. Deanes, 96, of Pittsburgh, PA, passed away, Sunday evening,
February 19, 2023, at the Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh with her
loving family by her side.
Helen was born on November 5, 1926, in Homestead, PA, a daughter of
the late Jesse and Charlie Lou (Cole) Ivy. She was married to Louis
Deanes, who preceded her in death, on December 20, 1947, and shared
41 years of marriage together.
Helen was a member of the St. James African Methodist Episcopal
Church and a former member of the Pilgrim Baptist Church. Her favorite
song was “In The Garden”. She was known for tending her roses and
vegetable gardens.
Helen is survived by her children, Beverly Deanes of Pittsburgh, PA,
Gloria Taylor of Titusville, PA, Joyce Williams of Pittsburgh, PA,
Anthony Deanes (Jacqueline) of Virginia Beach, VA, Keith Deanes
(Bridgette) of Pittsburgh, PA, Mary Ellen Johnson (William) of
Pittsburgh, PA. In addition to her husband and parents, Helen was
preceded in death by her eldest daughter Darling Durette-Billings, eldest
son Louis Deanes, Jr., (Karen) and Charles Deanes (Nora) and two
granddaughters Chareese Deanes and Bianca Deanes. At the last count
she had 9 grand-daughters and 14 grandsons, and too-numerous-to-count
great and great-great grandchildren.
Helen was a nurturer, gardener, and immaculate housekeeper. Helen was
well-known for her cooking skills. For any holiday people would line up
at the door for orders of her delicious pound cakes and sweet potato pies.
Her door was always open with a smile and Southern hospitality with a
seat at her dinner table for anyone.

Arrangements are made under the direction of Coston Funeral Home, Inc.,
427 Lincoln Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15206, 412-661-5916. Those
wishing to send floral condolences should send them to the funeral home
the day prior to the service.
Services will be performed on Friday, March 3, 2023 at the St. James
African Methodist Episcopal Church, 444 Lincoln Avenue, Pittsburgh,
PA 15206. Family & Friends will be received from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00
a.m. Memorial Service will begin at 11:00 to 12:00 with a funeral
luncheon following in Sumpter Hall at the church.
