Obituary for Georgia Coleman

Print
Georgia Mae Coleman, the youngest child of Rochester and Sara Stinson, was born November 21, 1939 in Columbus, GA. From these humble beginnings sprang a lifetime of love relationships, accomplishments and memories.

She was educated in the public schools of Muscogee County, attending Spencer High School and graduating from Turner High School in 1958. It was then that Georgia bade the south goodbye and moved to Pittsburgh, PA.

Georgia met Norris Coleman who would become the love of her life. They married on March 28, 1967 and later became the parents of five children. Their loving marriage ended nearly forty years later when Norris passed away.

Education was the foundation of Georgia’s employment career. Driven by her desire to be a registered nurse, she entered Community College of Allegheny County when she was 47 years old and earned a degree in nursing. She was employed at West Penn Hospital for over thirty years. She was employed as Nurse Manager for the Pediatric Unit at the Alma Illery Medical Center in Homewood. She also worked for the Pittsburgh Public Schools as nurse assigned to Westinghouse High School. After that stint, she retired.

Affectionately known as “Mother Coleman,” her spiritual journey began at an early age when she accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior and Lord. She grew up in a family that was not only spiritual, but musically gifted. Mother Coleman was an avid worshipper, singer and pianist. She served several congregations in Pittsburgh including Carter Chapel AME, First Church of God in Christ - 35 Miller Street with Bishop G.E. Vaughn, Miracle Church of God in Christ under the leadership of Elder James Davis, Christian Temple and finally Pentecostal Temple Church of God in Christ, where she remained faithful even when her health began to fail.

On Wednesday, October 24th, Mother Coleman’s life came to a triumphant end when she slipped away to spend eternity in the presence of Jesus, the Center of her joy. She finished the race well, having used her time, talent and treasure to help others. “Well done thou good and faithful servant. Enter into the joy of the Lord.” (St. Matthew 25:21) Her devoted family includes her children: Demetrius, Noreen, LaMonte, Valarie and Crystal; grandchildren: Sydney, Christian, Brandon, Chauncey, Jordan, Jenaya, Jaylen, Jared, Kennedy, Christopher and Eboni, and her only sibling, Betty Jasper, nephew Stephen Jasper and numerous other relatives including nieces, nephews and cousins. Mother Coleman’s priority was her family.

Because of her devotion to the Lord, all of her children follow and serve Him. She also leaves a legacy of an impressive prayer life and service to the people of God.
