Obituary for Elizabeth Carpenter

Elizabeth Carpenter, 100 years old, passed away peacefully at her home, July 19, 2020. She was born September 27, 1919 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Although she was the oldest of 5 children, she outlived them all.

Raised in Homewood, she attended Homewood Elementary School and graduated from Westinghouse High School, Class of 1937. She enjoyed her years at the "House" and participated in Billy Strayhorn's musical "Fantastic Rhythms".

Through a friend she met and married Sherman Carpenter. Together, they raised a family of five children: Marlene, presently in OK., Marlin, Lillian, Sherman, all in Pittsburgh, and Michele Strayhorn, in Chester Springs, PA. This union ended with Sherman's passing in 1964. Then, she entered the workforce holding jobs as a "day worker", housekeeper at Collins Nursing Home, and domestic worker for a private family. Everyone loved her dearly.

She loved being a wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother spending time nurturing, teaching, guiding, loving and forgiving. She would read to them, recite poetry to them, bake cookies, cakes and pies for them, especially birthday cakes that she decorated herself. She would often purchase children's books to give to her kids and the grands. She encouraged her children to know the Lord at Blackadore Avenue Presbyterian Church and later at Valley View Presbyterian where she was an active member. Her church family brought her joy and peace.

She enjoyed reading the latest novels, traveling with Hill District AARP #4706, watching Steve Harvey and sending greeting cards embellished with stickers. Most of all, she cherished being: "Mom", "Granny", "Auntie", "Cousin Liz", "Miss Bette", "Carpie", "Adopted Mom".

Family and friends, who mourn her passing, will forever hear her say "Blessings always".

Private family services will be held. Interment - Homewood Cemetery
