Arthur Emmett Barnette Jr. peacefully passed away on June 14, 2020 at age 89. He resided at Southwestern Veterans Center on Highland Drive where he was loved and supported by an incredible Staff. Arthur was born in Pittsburgh, PA on January 9, 1931 to the late Arthur Emmett Barnette Sr. and Hattie Mitchell.
Arthur grew up in Glen Hazel with his loving parents and siblings. He was very close to his siblings and often talked about the fun he had especially with his brothers playing ball, sneaking to the river to fish (without rods), playing cards and hanging out on the railroad tracks near their home on Herbert Way. He lost both parents at a very early age. Although he and his siblings had really hard times after losing their parents, they stayed very close and took care of each other. As adults, Arthur and his siblings took advantage of every opportunity to spend time together playing bid whist, shooting pool, watching football and family cookouts while enjoying a beverage or two. Arthur also loved listening to jazz and blues music.
Arthur attended Gladstone High School before enlisting in the United States Army at age 17 and served in the Korean War. He met and married the late Vernetta (Robinson) Barnette whom he affectionately called "Peanie". He was a devoted and loving husband and to this Union were four daughters: Naomi, Gloria, Audrey and Antoinette. He also was a devoted and loving father to Charlotte Williams and Paul Williams. He worked at the VA Hospital on Highland Drive and retired in 1988 after 30 years of dedicated service.
Left to cherish Arthur's memory are his daughters: Naomi Barnes, Gloria (Alfred) Glaze, Antoinette Barnette, fourteen grandchildren, many great and great, great children, nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 64 years, Vernetta (Robinson) Barnette, three children: Charlotte (Williams) Grayson, Paul Williams and Audrey Patterson; four brothers: Leonard E. Barnette, John T. Barnette, Sr., Richard D. Barnette and George M. Barnette; two sisters: Naomi Boulware, Gloria Montgomery and a special nephew John T. Barnette, Jr. (Chippy)
Arthur was the Patriarch of the Barnette Family from an early age and always felt it was his responsibility and duty to take care of the family up until the late morning of June 14, 2020. He will be truly missed, forever loved and never forgotten.
