Alice (Griffin) Durham was born April 25, 1935 to the late Stephen and Luanna Griffin in Wilmington, Delaware. The family moved to Marks, Mississippi. From Mississippi, the family then moved and settled in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Alice attended Pittsburgh Public Schools and graduated from Fifth Avenue High School. She later graduated from cosmetology school. Soon after, she met and married the late James O. Durham, Sr. To this union, two sons : were born: James. Jr. and the late Stephen, Sr. Alice later became a beautician in the Hill District section of Pittsburgh. She then moved on to working on Carnegie Library's Bookmobile until she retired.
Although she didn't drive, you could find Alice on the bus heading to downtown Pittsburgh where she loved to shop at Kaufmann's. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, reading and gardening. She attended St. Benedict the Moor Church for many years and after retirement, enjoyed attending fitness and line dancing classes at the downtown and Thelma Lovett YMCA's, as well as The Vintage.
Alice peacefully transitioned from this life on Wednesday, October 19, 2022 at Reformed Presbyterian Home. She was preceded in death by her parents, Stephen and Luanna Griffin; her late husband, James O. Durham, Sr.; her late son, Stephen Durham, Sr. She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted son James (Wanda); daughter-in-law, Ada; grandchildren Nichole (Durham) Gardner, Stephen Durham, Jr. and Paul Durham, Sr.; two great granddaughters, Maya and Morgan Gardner; two great-great grandchildren Paul Durham, Jr. and Zaire Durham; two sisters-in-law. Christine Wallace of Atlanta, GA and Towanda Carter of Pittsburgh, PA and a host of other relatives and friends.
