Did you know Funeral Homes are required by law to provide Price Lists?meeting

According to the Federal Trade Commission, all Funeral Homes in the United States are required by law to adhere to The Funeral Rule. This rule requires funeral homes to give consumers an itemized General Price List (GPL) at the start of a visit to the home to make funeral arrangements.

Funeral homes also must show consumers separate casket and outer burial container price lists if those prices are not included in the GPL. By requiring itemized prices, the Rule gives consumers the ability to compare prices among funeral homes and buy only the goods and services they want.

"At Coston Funeral Homes our prices are easily available to the public," Roland Coston-Criswell, owner of Coston Funeral Homes said. "We have made it easy for our consumers to view our price list. They can download it online on our website or call our offices or stop by for a printed copy."

Many times, when preparing to bury a loved one, family members will call funeral homes for pricing. Once they have decided upon a funeral home and go in to make arrangements, the bill is 20%-30% more than the price they were quoted on the phone.

To avoid this common pitfall in the funeral industry, follow these simple steps:

  1. When calling funeral homes to gather pricing information, ask them for a general price list.
  2. When obtaining prices, clearly state exactly what you want. (For example: A four-hour visitation at the funeral home with the funeral service at a church).
  3. Write down all the pricing figures the funeral home gives you on your initial call. Just in case there is a discrepancy in price, refer to your initial notes.
  4. Don't be a victim to the pricing game. Receive your pricing up-front. Have an idea of what your budget for funeral services is and stick to it.
